Engineering Disruption Track 1 : Responding to Climate Change, November 28th

Track 1 explores how we can respond to climate change.

Themes explored may include

•Adapting and responding to climate change

•Preserving Biodiversity

•Managing the Nitrogen Cycle

•Carbon Sequestration

Some suggestions so far have been :

Psychological scepticism of climate science and acceptance of climate change policies /

  1. Hi, my name is Kristen Splinter. I am a lecturer in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a focus on Coastal processes. My research ranges from predicting storm response to decadal changes in shoreline behaviour on sandy coastlines. I am also involved in research looking at wave dynamics on Pacific Islands.     I am interested in collaborating on work in the Pacific Islands to better understand vulnerability due to climate change, extreme events and sea level rise. This could include (but not limited to) collaboration on learning more on the social impacts to peoples after extreme events/adaptation to SLR, as well as chemical/biological changes to coral reefs, etc.

  2. Hi all, my name is Will Tran. I am a second year Mechanical Engineering student. I don’t have any research per se, but I am highly interested in carbon sequestration and mitigation. One of the researches that caught my eye recently is an american study on converting carbon dioxide into ethanol.
    I joined this event mainly because I wanted to expand my engineering skills and learn more about new technologies and innovations.
    I’m not sure if I’m going to be of much help but I’m open to any and all research opportunity.

    I’m Sonia Graham. I lecture in Social Research and Policy in the School of Social Sciences. During my post-doc at the University of Melbourne I undertook research to understand the social impacts of adaptation to climate change.     I’m keen to continue this sort of work here at UNSW, especially if it involves working with people from other disciplines to get some new understandings of and pproaches to the issue.
    Kristen, Jon Barnett at the University of Melbourne has done plenty of work in the Pacific looking at the social impacts of sea-level rise.
